Contents of the pack and other information
1. What Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s is and what it is used for
Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s contains eltrombopag, which belongs to a group of medicines called
thrombopoietin receptor agonists. It is used to help increase the number of platelets in the blood. Platelets are blood cells that help reduce or prevent bleeding.
Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s is used to treat a blood clotting disorder called immune (primary) thrombocytopenia (ITP) in patients aged 1 year and older who have already taken other medicines (corticosteroids or immunoglobulins) that were not effective.
ITP is caused by a low number of platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia). People with ITP have an increased risk of bleeding. Symptoms that patients with ITP may notice include petechiae (small flat red spots under the skin the size of a pinprick), bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, and difficulty controlling bleeding from cuts or injuries.
Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s may also be used to treat low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) in adults with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who have experienced problems with adverse reactions during treatment with interferon. Many people with hepatitis C have a low platelet count, not only due to the disease itself but also because of some antiviral medicines used to treat it. By taking Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s, it may be easier for you to complete a full course of antiviral therapy (peginterferon and ribavirin).
2. What you should know before taking Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s
Do not take Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s
if you are allergic to eltrombopag or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
(listed in section 6 under "What Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s contains").
→ Check with your doctor if you think this applies to you.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor before taking Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s:
if you have liver problems. People who have low platelet counts and advanced chronic (long-term) liver disease are at higher risk of side effects, including liver damage and life-threatening blood clots. If your doctor considers that the benefits of taking Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s outweigh the risks, you will be closely monitored during treatment.
if you are at risk of forming blood clots in veins or arteries, or if you know that blood clots are common in your family.
You may be at increased risk of blood clot formation:
if you are elderly
if you have had to remain in bed for a long time
if you have cancer
if you are taking birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy
if you have recently undergone surgery or suffered physical trauma
if you are very overweight (obese)
if you are a smoker
if you have advanced chronic liver disease
- If any of these apply to you, inform your doctor before starting treatment. You must not take Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s unless your doctor considers that the expected benefits outweigh the risk of blood clots.
- if you have cataracts (clouding of the eye's lens)
- if you have another blood disorder, such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Your doctor will perform tests to check that you do not have this blood disorder before starting Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s. If you have MDS and take Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s, your MDS may worsen.
- Inform your doctor if any of these situations apply to you.
Eye examinations
Your doctor will recommend regular check-ups for cataracts. If you do not routinely have eye exams, your doctor will arrange regular monitoring. You may also be monitored for signs of bleeding inside or around the retina (the layer of light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye).
You will need regular blood tests
Before starting Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s, your doctor will perform blood tests to check your blood cells, including platelets. These tests will be repeated at intervals while you are taking the medicine.
Blood tests for liver function
Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s may alter blood test results that could indicate liver damage – an increase in certain liver enzymes, particularly bilirubin and alanine/aspartate transaminase. If you are receiving interferon-based treatments in combination with Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s for low platelet counts due to hepatitis C, some liver problems may worsen.
Before starting Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s and at regular intervals during treatment, you will need blood tests to monitor liver function. You may need to stop taking Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s if levels of these enzymes become too high or if other signs of liver damage appear.
Read the information " Liver problems " in section 4 of this leaflet.
Blood tests for platelet count
If you stop taking Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s, your platelet count is likely to decrease again within a few days. Your platelet count will be monitored, and your doctor will discuss appropriate precautions with you.
A very high platelet count may increase the risk of blood clots. However, blood clots can also form even when the platelet count is normal or even low. Your doctor will adjust the dose of Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s to ensure that your platelet count does not become too high.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following signs indicating a blood clot:
swelling, pain, or tenderness in one leg
sudden onset of shortness of breath, especially if accompanied by sharp chest pain or rapid breathing
abdominal (stomach) pain, swollen abdomen, blood in stool
Tests to monitor bone marrow
In people with bone marrow disorders, medicines like Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s may worsen the condition. Signs of bone marrow changes may appear as abnormal results in blood tests. During treatment with Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s, your doctor may also perform tests to directly monitor your bone marrow.
Tests for gastrointestinal bleeding
If you are receiving interferon-based treatments together with Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s, you will be monitored for signs of bleeding in the stomach or intestines after stopping Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s.
Heart monitoring
Your doctor may consider it necessary to monitor your heart during treatment with Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s and may perform an electrocardiogram (ECG).
Elderly people (65 years and older)
There is limited data on the use of Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s in patients aged 65 years and older. Caution is required when using Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s in patients aged 65 years or older.
Children and adolescents
Eltrombopag Dr. Reddy’s is not recommended for children under 1 year of age with ITP. It is also not recommended for people under 18 years of age with low platelet counts due to hepatitis C.
