  6. Contents of the pack and other information

1. What SeptaNasal is and what it is used for

This medicine contains xylometazoline hydrochloride and dexpanthenol.

Xylometazoline hydrochloride causes rapid constriction of the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, reducing inflammation of the nasal mucosa and mucous secretion. This helps relieve nasal congestion. Dexpanthenol is a derivative of pantothenic acid vitamin (vitamin B5), which promotes healing and protects the nasal mucosa.

SeptaNasal is used for the local and temporary relief of nasal congestion and nasal mucosal conditions associated with inflammation and/or minor wounds, with or without crust formation, in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

2. What you need to know before using SeptaNasal

Do not use SeptaNasal

  • if you or your child are allergic to xylometazoline hydrochloride, dexpanthenol, or any of the other components of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • if you have recently undergone head surgery (if you have had cranial, transnasal, or transoral surgery).
  • if you have high ocular pressure, especially if you have narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • if you or your child have dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa (dry rhinitis).
  • if you are being treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or if you have taken MAOIs within the previous 2 weeks before starting treatment with this medicine.
  • if you are particularly prone to inflammation of the blood vessels in your nose.
  • if you or your child have undergone surgical removal of the pituitary gland or other surgery exposing the meninges (the lining of the brain).

This medicine must not be used in children under 12 years of age.

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine:

  • if you are being treated with antidepressant medicines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), phenothiazines (tranquilizers), methyldopa (to lower blood pressure), or other medicines that may increase blood pressure.
  • if you have elevated intraocular pressure (glaucoma), especially if you have narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • if you have a serious cardiovascular or circulatory disorder (e.g. coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension, or long QT syndrome).
  • if you have ever experienced insomnia or dizziness while taking other sympathomimetic medicines, such as those used to treat heart conditions, hypotension (low blood pressure), or asthma.
  • if you have a metabolic disorder (e.g. diabetes, porphyria, or increased thyroid gland activity associated with increased sweating, body temperature, or heart rate).
  • if you have a tumor of the adrenal medulla (pheochromocytoma).
  • if you have prostate enlargement.

In any of the above cases, consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting to use this medicine.

In rare cases, xylometazoline may increase nasal congestion rather than relieve it; this is because the effects of xylometazoline are temporary, and prolonged use may lead to rebound congestion with vasodilation, congestion, and rhinitis.

Rarely, insomnia may occur after using the medicine. If this happens, avoid using it late in the afternoon or at night.

To prevent infection, this medicine must not be shared between individuals, and the applicator should always be cleaned after each use with a clean, damp cloth.

Children

The use of SeptaNasal is only indicated in children over 12 years of age.

Use in people aged 65 years or older

Consult your doctor or pharmacist, as elderly individuals may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine.

Other medicines and SeptaNasal

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might need to take any other medicines.

Using this medicine together with certain antidepressant medicines (such as MAOIs like tranylcypromine or tricyclic antidepressants), as well as medicines that increase blood pressure, could lead to an increase in blood pressure due to the cardiovascular effects of these substances.

Medicines used to lower blood pressure (e.g. methyldopa) should not be used together with xylometazoline due to its hypertensive effect.

Consult a doctor before using this medicine if you or your child are taking any of the above-mentioned medicines.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.

This medicine should not be used during pregnancy due to lack of safety data in pregnant women.
