INSTRUCTION FOR MEDICAL USE OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT CASTOR OIL
Composition:
Active substance: castor oil (Oleum Ricini);
1 bottle contains 30 g or 100 g of castor oil.
Pharmaceutical form. Oral oil.
Main physicochemical properties: clear, thick, viscous, almost colorless or slightly yellowish liquid with a faint odor.
Pharmacotherapeutic group. Laxative. ATC code A06AB05.
Pharmacological properties.
Pharmacodynamics. When administered orally, it is hydrolyzed by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid, which irritates intestinal receptors and reflexively enhances intestinal peristalsis. The laxative effect usually occurs within 5–6 hours. The drug also causes reflex contraction of the myometrium.
Clinical characteristics.
Indications.
Constipation.
Contraindications.
Hypersensitivity to the drug. Poisoning with fat-soluble substances (phosphorus, benzene, phenol).
Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, ulcerative colitis. Poisoning with fat-soluble anthelmintics, male fern extract. Acute inflammatory conditions within the abdominal cavity (appendicitis, peritonitis). Uterine bleeding. Cachexia. Pregnancy period. Advanced age. Pediatric age under 12 years.
Hypersensitivity to plants of the Euphorbiaceae family, undiagnosed abdominal pain, biliary tract obstruction, severe dehydration.
Special precautions.

Concomitant use of Castor Oil with male fern extract is not recommended.

Castor oil is a conventional herbal medicinal product for use according to indications supported by long-standing use.
The patient should consult a doctor if symptoms of the disease do not disappear during the use of the medicinal product or if adverse reactions occur that are not listed in the instructions for medical use of the medicinal product.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
The use of the product is contraindicated in pregnant women. During breastfeeding, the product should be used only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the possible risk to the infant.
Ability to influence reaction speed when driving or operating machinery. No data available.
Method of Administration and Dosage.
For oral use.
The recommended dose for adults and children aged 12 years and older is 15–30 g per dose.
If the drug is used for bowel cleansing prior to diagnostic procedures, it should be taken 6 hours before the procedure.
Children.
The drug is administered to children aged 12 years and older.
Overdose. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea. Treatment is symptomatic.
Adverse reactions.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, water-electrolyte imbalance. After bowel evacuation, constipation is possible. With prolonged use – digestive disturbances, enterocolitis, development of dependence, intestinal atony.
Allergic reactions are possible.
