INSTRUCTION FOR MEDICAL USE OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT WORMWOOD TINCTURE (TINCTURA ABSINTHII)

Composition:

Active substance: wormwood herb tincture (Absinthii herba) (1 : 5) (extractant — 70% ethanol);

1 bottle contains wormwood herb tincture (Absinthii herba) (1 : 5) (extractant — 70% ethanol) — 25 ml or 50 ml.

Pharmaceutical form. Tincture.

Main physico-chemical properties: transparent brownish-green liquid with a characteristic odor and bitter taste. A mixture of the preparation with water (2 : 1) produces a cloudy solution. Formation of a precipitate during storage is permissible.

Pharmaco-therapeutic group. Appetite stimulants. ATC code A15.

Pharmacological Properties

Pharmacodynamics.

Wormwood tincture contains bitter substances. The mechanism of action of the drug is due to irritation of sensitive nerve endings—taste receptors of the oral mucosa and tongue—which reflexively enhances gastric juice secretion, increases appetite, and improves digestion.

Pharmacokinetics. Not studied.

Clinical characteristics.

Indications. Hypoacid and achylous gastritis, anorexia — as part of complex therapy.

Contraindications. Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Increased gastric secretion, peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, reflux esophagitis, cholelithiasis, epilepsy. History of pelvic organ bleeding; anemia.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interactions.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Ability to affect reaction rate when driving or operating machinery.

Since ethanol is an ingredient of the medicine, it may affect the ability to drive vehicles or operate potentially hazardous machinery. Therefore, during treatment with this medicine, avoid engaging in activities involving potentially hazardous machinery.

Method of Administration and Dosage.

Adults and children aged 12 years and older should take 15–20 drops 3 times daily, 15–30 minutes before meals. The duration of treatment is determined individually by a physician and depends on the severity of the disease, concomitant therapy, and the therapeutic effect achieved.

Children.

Do not use in children under 12 years of age. In children aged 12 years and older, the drug should be used only as prescribed by a physician.

Overdose.

Use in higher doses, especially prolonged use, may lead to poisoning—development of seizures, hallucinations, and loss of consciousness.

With prolonged use, atonic constipation is possible.

Treatment. Symptomatic.

Side effects.

Prolonged use of wormwood tincture may cause so-called wormwood epilepsy. Nausea, vomiting, and possible hypersensitivity reactions (including hyperemia, rash, itching) may occur. If any adverse reactions occur, discontinue use of the medication immediately and consult a physician without delay.

Shelf life. 5 years.

Do not use after the expiry date stated on the packaging.

Storage conditions.

Store in the original packaging at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C. Keep out of reach of children. Formation of sediment during storage is permissible.

25 ml in glass bottles stoppered with corks or dropper inserts with caps, or 50 ml in glass bottles stoppered with dropper inserts and caps, in a carton or without a carton. 25 ml or 50 ml in polymer bottles stoppered with dropper inserts and caps, in a carton or without a carton.
