INSTRUCTION FOR MEDICAL USE OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT OXOLIN (OXOLIN)

Composition:

Active substance: oxolin;

1 g of ointment contains 2.5 mg of oxolin;

Excipients: mineral oil, white soft paraffin.

Pharmaceutical form. Ointment.

Main physicochemical properties: ointment from white to light yellow in color. A pinkish tint may appear during storage.

Pharmacotherapeutic group. Drugs used for cough and colds. Other anti-cold medicinal products. ATC Code R05X.

Pharmacological properties.

Pharmacodynamics.

Oxolin is an antiviral agent for topical use, possessing virucidal activity by blocking the binding sites of the influenza virus (mainly type A2) to the cell membrane surface, thus protecting cells from viral penetration. Oxolin is also active against Herpes simplex viruses, varicella-zoster virus, adenoviruses, viruses of infectious warts, and molluscum contagiosum virus.

Pharmacokinetics.

The drug is non-toxic and, when applied locally, does not produce systemic effects and does not accumulate in the body. When applied to the mucous membrane, 20% is absorbed and excreted mainly by the kidneys within 24 hours.

Clinical characteristics.

Indications.

Prevention of influenza; treatment of viral rhinitis.

Contraindications.

Individual hypersensitivity to oxolinic acid and other components of the medicinal product.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction.

Concomitant intranasal use with adrenomimetic agents may lead to drying of the nasal mucosa.

Special precautions for use.

The ointment is not intended for application to the mucous membrane of the eyes.

The medicinal product must not be applied to damaged skin.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Safety data are lacking; therefore, the use of the drug is not recommended during these periods.

Ability to affect reaction speed when driving or operating machinery.

The drug does not affect the speed of neuromuscular conduction — it can be used as recommended in individuals who drive vehicles or operate complex machinery.

Method of Administration and Dosage.

For influenza prophylaxis: apply to the nasal mucosa 2–3 times daily for 25 days or during contact with infected individuals.

Treatment of viral rhinitis: apply to the nasal mucosa 2–3 times daily for 3–4 days.

Children.

Data on the safety and efficacy of the drug in children are lacking.

Overdose.

Cases of overdose are unknown. In case of oxoline overdose, sensations of burning, irritation of the skin and mucous membranes at the application site, and rhinorrhea may occur. Hypersensitivity reactions are possible.

Treatment: discontinue the drug, wash off residual ointment with warm water.

Side effects.

A burning sensation at the site of ointment application, which quickly subsides, rhinorrhea, and blue discoloration of the mucous membrane may occur. Hypersensitivity reactions are possible.

Shelf life. 2 years.

Storage conditions.

Store in the original packaging at a temperature of 2 °C to 8 °C.
