1. What Viru-POS is and what it is used for

Viru-POS ophthalmic ointment prevents the multiplication of certain viruses.
It is indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex keratitis.

2. Important information before using Viru-POS

When not to use Viru-POS

if the patient is allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and precautions
Before starting treatment with Viru-POS, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.
Wearing contact lenses during treatment of viral corneal infections with Viru-POS is contraindicated.
To ensure optimal therapy with Viru-POS, treatment should be started as early as possible.
During treatment, you should visit your attending physician for check-ups 2–3 times per week.
Shortly after application, a transient mild stinging sensation may occur.

Viru-POS and other medicines
You should tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are currently taking or have recently taken, as well as any medicines you plan to use.
Interactions with other medicines are not known.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, suspects she may be pregnant, or is planning to have a child, she should consult her doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
The doctor will consider prescribing aciclovir only if the expected benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the fetus or child.
Driving and operating machinery
Due to its consistency, the ointment may temporarily impair visual acuity, which should be taken into account when driving, operating mechanical equipment, or using dangerous tools.

3. How to use Viru-Pos

This medicine should always be used exactly as directed by the physician. In case of doubt, consult
your doctor or pharmacist.
If you are using other eye drops or ointments at the same time, a 15-minute interval should be
observed between each medicine, and the ointment should always be applied last.
The recommended dose is a 1 cm strip of ointment squeezed from the tube, to be administered five
times daily into the lower conjunctival sac (the pocket formed by pulling down the lower eyelid) every
4 hours, with a break during the night. Treatment should continue for at least 3 days after healing of
the lesions.
When applying the ointment, do not touch the eye, face, or any other surface with the tip of the
tube's applicator.
Tilt your head slightly backward and pull down the lower eyelid, then place the appropriate amount
of ointment into the lower conjunctival sac. Then close the eyelid slowly. After use, close the tube
carefully with the cap.
If you feel that the effect of Viru-Pos is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.
Use of more Viru-Pos than recommended
If you use more of this medicine than recommended, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Missed dose of Viru-Pos
Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

4. Possible adverse reactions

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause adverse reactions, although not everybody will
experience them.
The following adverse reactions have been observed:
Very common (affects more than 1 in 10 people): superficial punctate keratitis, which usually
does not require premature discontinuation of treatment and heals without visible harmful
consequences.
Common (affects more than 1 in 100 and less than 1 in 10 people): conjunctivitis and mild,
transient burning sensation immediately after ointment application.
Uncommon (affects more than 1 in 10,000 and less than 1 in 1,000 people): blepharitis.
Very rare (affects less than 1 in 10,000 people): immediate hypersensitivity reactions with
angioedema (Quincke's edema, pale swelling, primarily of the face), urticaria.
If severe allergic reactions occur (swelling of hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth, throat,
difficulty swallowing or breathing, rash, urticaria), treatment must be discontinued and
immediate contact made with a doctor or the nearest hospital Emergency Department.
If treatment must be discontinued due to adverse reactions, the prescribing doctor should be
informed so that an alternative medicine can be prescribed.
Reporting of adverse reactions
If any adverse symptoms occur, including any adverse symptoms not listed in this leaflet,
inform a doctor or pharmacist. Adverse reactions can be reported directly to the Department of Monitoring of Adverse Drug Reactions at the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products

5. How to store Viru-Pos

Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the tube. The expiry date refers to the last day of the stated month.
Do not store above 25°C.
Use-by date after first opening of the tube: 1 month.
Medicines must not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the package and other information

What Viru-POS contains
The active substance is 30 mg of aciclovir.
The other ingredient is white vaseline.

What Viru-POS looks like and contents of the pack
Viru-POS is a white-greyish ointment in an aluminium tube with a cap.
The tube contains 4.5 g of ointment.
