INSTRUCTION for medical use of St. John's wort herb
Composition:
Active substance: herba hyperici;
1 pack contains 75 g of St. John's wort herb.
Pharmaceutical form. Herb.
Main physico-chemical properties: fragments of leaves, stems, flowers of various shapes and immature fruits, greenish-yellow, greyish-green, green, dark green, bright yellow or yellow with black dots, greenish-brown, sometimes pinkish-violet in color.
Pharmacotherapeutic group. Agents affecting the digestive system and metabolism. Agents used in dentistry. ATC code A01AD11.
Pharmacological properties.
Pharmacodynamics. St. John's wort herb contains tannins, flavonoids (hyperoside, rutin, quercitrin, myricetin, leucoanthocyanins), saponins, pigments (hypericin, pseudohypericin, hyperin, frangulaemodin anthranol), essential oil, resinous substances, carotene, and ascorbic acid. This complex of biologically active substances has astringent, anti-inflammatory, and some antimicrobial effects, promotes tissue regeneration, moderately affects bile secretion, stimulates gastric secretion, etc.
Pharmacokinetics. Not studied.
Clinical characteristics.
Indications.
Liver and biliary tract diseases (biliary dyskinesia, hepatitis, cholecystitis); gastrointestinal tract disorders (acute and chronic colitis, diarrhea, meteorism, hypacid gastritis); inflammatory conditions of the oral cavity (gingivitis, stomatitis).
Contraindications.
Individual hypersensitivity to the substances contained in the medicinal product. Arterial hypertension.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction.
Not recommended for use in patients taking anticoagulants, antibiotics, sulfonamides, contraceptives, antihypertensive agents (calcium channel blockers), lipid-lowering agents (statins), female sex hormones, or cardiac glycosides.
Special precautions for use.
Hypericum herb is recommended to be prescribed to patients with arterial hypertension only as part of herbal mixtures.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Safety and efficacy during pregnancy and breastfeeding have not been studied; therefore, Hypericum preparations are not administered internally.
Ability to influence reaction rate when driving or operating machinery.
Hypericum preparations may in some patients cause an increase in arterial pressure; therefore, caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery.
Method of Administration and Dosage.
Place 10 g (1.5 tablespoons) of the herb into an enameled container, pour 200 ml (1 cup) of hot boiled water, cover with a lid, and heat on a boiling water bath for 30 minutes. Allow to cool at room temperature for 10 minutes, then filter and squeeze the residue into the strained decoction. Adjust the final volume of the decoction to 200 ml with boiled water.
The decoction should be taken warm, 30 minutes before meals. Adults and children aged 16 years and older should take 1/3 cup three times daily. Children aged 12–14 years should take 1–2 tablespoons 2–3 times daily. Children aged 15–16 years should take 1/4 cup 2–3 times daily.
Externally, the decoction is used for rinsing the mouth.
The decoction should be shaken before use.
The duration of treatment is determined individually, depending on the course of the disease, stability of the achieved therapeutic effect, and the patient's tolerance of the medicinal product.
Children.
Use in children under 12 years of age is contraindicated.
Overdose.
Overdose or prolonged use may cause a bitter taste in the mouth and discomfort in the liver area.
Side effects.
Increased blood pressure; allergic reactions (including hyperemia, rash, swelling and itching of the skin); photosensitization (during treatment, avoid UV exposure).
Shelf life. 3 years.
Storage conditions.
Store in the original packaging at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C.
The prepared decoction should be stored in a cool place for no more than 2 days.
