INSTRUCTION FOR MEDICAL USE OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT CASTOR OIL (CASTOR OIL)

Composition:

Active substance: castor oil;

50 ml of the medicinal product contains: castor oil – 50 ml.

Pharmaceutical form. Oil.

Main physico-chemical properties: transparent, almost colorless or light yellow, viscous, hygroscopic liquid.

Pharmacotherapeutic group. Laxatives.

Pharmacological properties.

Pharmacodynamics.

When administered orally, it is hydrolyzed by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid, which irritates intestinal receptors and reflexively enhances intestinal peristalsis. The laxative effect usually occurs within 5–6 hours. The drug also causes reflex contraction of the myometrium.

Contraindications.

Hypersensitivity to the drug. Poisoning with fat-soluble substances (phosphorus, benzene, etc.). Gastric and duodenal ulcers, ulcerative colitis. Poisoning with fat-soluble anthelmintics, male fern extract. Acute inflammatory conditions within the abdominal cavity (appendicitis, peritonitis). Uterine bleeding. Cachexia. Advanced age.

Hypersensitivity to plants of the Spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), undiagnosed abdominal pain, biliary tract obstruction, severe dehydration.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction.

It is not recommended to use Castor oil simultaneously with male fern extract.

Special precautions for use.

Castor oil is a traditional herbal medicinal product of plant origin. The indications for use of this medicinal product are based on long-standing use. The medicinal product should be used only according to the specified indications. Do not violate the recommended usage instructions — this may harm your health.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Use of this medicinal product is contraindicated during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, the product may be used only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the infant.

Dosage and Administration.

For oral use. The recommended dose for adults and children aged 12 years and older is 15–30 g per dose. If the medicinal product is used for bowel cleansing prior to diagnostic procedures, it should be taken 6 hours before the procedure.

If disease symptoms persist during medication use or if any adverse reactions occur, the patient should consult a physician.

Children. The medicinal product is intended for use in children aged 12 years and older.

Overdose.

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea. Treatment is symptomatic.

Side effects.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, water-electrolyte imbalance. Constipation is possible after bowel evacuation. With prolonged use – digestive disturbances, enterocolitis, development of dependence, intestinal atony. Allergic reactions are possible.
