Pharmacological properties.
Eucalyptus tincture contains tannins, ellagic acid, flavonoids, resins, wax, and essential oil composed of various terpenoid compounds, particularly active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, and which inhibit the growth of fungi and protozoa. Eucalyptus suppresses the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia, tuberculous mycobacteria, trichomonads, and dysentery amoeba. The main component of the essential oil is cineole, a monocyclic terpene. Eucalyptus tincture exerts antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and disinfecting effects, which are due to the oxidative action of the cineole monocyclic terpene and anti-inflammatory influence associated with practically all physiologically active substances contained in its composition. The preparation also exhibits a moderate sedative (calming) effect.
