1. What Carbo Medicinalis MF is and what it is used for

Carbo Medicinalis MF is a round, black tablet containing 250 mg of activated charcoal (also known as medicinal charcoal). This medicine is used for diarrhoea and flatulence, and also, in consultation with a doctor, in poisoning by drugs or other chemical substances.
Medicinal charcoal is poorly effective in poisoning with boric acid, iron sulfate and other metal compounds, DDT, cyanides, lithium, ethanol, methanol, ethylene glycol, water-insoluble compounds, as well as inorganic acids and bases.
If there is no improvement or if the patient feels worse, medical advice should be sought (see section 2: Warnings and precautions).

2. Important information before using Carbo Medicinalis MF

When not to use Carbo Medicinalis MF

• if the patient is allergic to medicinal charcoal or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
• in unconscious patients.

Warnings and precautions
This medicine should be used with caution in cases of poisoning with agents affecting intestinal peristalsis (e.g.
opioids such as morphine and its derivatives). Laxatives should be used cautiously and only
sporadically during treatment with activated charcoal, as severe and prolonged diarrhoea may
lead to water and electrolyte imbalances.
If vomiting occurs, or if vomiting needs to be induced using an oral medicine, vomiting should be induced
before administering charcoal. Carbo Medicinalis MF should be administered
30–60 minutes after vomiting has ceased.
If more than 27 tablets are taken per day, the amount of sucrose (sugar) contained in the tablets
exceeds 5 g/24 h; this should be taken into account in diabetic patients.
If a patient has previously been diagnosed with intolerance to certain sugars, the patient should
consult a physician before taking this medicine.
Patients who have taken this preparation for 7 days due to bloating or for 2 days due to diarrhoea,
and whose symptoms persist despite treatment, should consult a physician.
If blood appears in the stool or fever develops during treatment for diarrhoea, the patient should consult
a physician.

Children
It is best to administer the medicine to children in the form of an aqueous paste prepared from crushed tablets.

Carbo Medicinalis MF and other medicines
Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines currently taken or recently taken, as well as any medicines planned for future use.
Medicinal charcoal may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of other medicines.
It binds medicinal substances on its surface, including those used in epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, infections, hypertension and heart diseases, as well as many other drugs and substances, including: barbiturates, benzodiazepines, phenytoin, chloramphenicol, chlorpromazine, phenothiazines, mianserin, MAO inhibitors, chloroquine, quinine, nicotine, chlormethiazole, clonidine, digoxin, propranolol and other β-adrenergic receptor blockers, acetylsalicylic acid and other salicylates, ibuprofen, mefenamic acid, paracetamol, theophylline, zidovudine.
Medicines should be taken at least 2 hours before or after taking medicinal charcoal.

Carbo Medicinalis MF with food and drink
Medicinal charcoal should not be administered together with food, as this may reduce its effectiveness.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, suspects she may be pregnant, or is planning to have a child, she should consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.

Driving and operating machinery
Carbo Medicinalis MF does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Carbo Medicinalis MF contains sucrose and lactose
This medicine contains sucrose and lactose. If a patient has previously been diagnosed with intolerance to certain sugars, the patient should consult a physician before taking this medicine.
If more than 27 tablets are taken per day, the amount of sucrose (sugar) contained in the tablets
exceeds 5 g/24 h; this should be taken into account in diabetic patients.

3. How to use Carbo Medicinalis MF

This medicine should always be taken exactly as described in the patient leaflet or as directed by a physician or pharmacist. If in doubt, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Carbo Medicinalis MF is for oral use.
Adults and children over 12 years of age

• Flatulence: 4 to 5 tablets several times a day until symptoms subside.
• Diarrhoea: 12 to 16 tablets at a time. Tablets should be crushed or chewed before swallowing. It is best administered as an aqueous paste prepared from crushed tablets. If necessary, the dose may be repeated every few hours.
• Poisoning with drugs or other toxic substances: administer 49 to 50 tablets at once. In severe cases of poisoning, up to 100 g of activated charcoal may be given at one time. If necessary, the dose may be repeated several times within 24 hours.

Children over 1 year of age
Poisoning with drugs or other toxic substances: administer 49 to 50 tablets at once. If necessary, may be given several times within 24 hours.
Children under 1 year of age
Poisoning with drugs or other toxic substances: usually 1 g/kg body weight as a single dose, administered as a suspension in water. If necessary, may be repeated every 4 to 6 hours.

4. Possible adverse reactions

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause adverse reactions, although not everybody will experience them.
Large amounts of medicinal charcoal, especially after repeated administration, may cause gastrointestinal disturbances and constipation. Vomiting may occur in children. There is also a risk of medicinal charcoal entering the lungs.
The medicine may blacken the stools.

If any adverse reactions occur, including any adverse reactions not listed in the leaflet, inform your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.

By reporting adverse reactions, additional information on the safety of the medicine can be collected.

5. How to store Carbo Medicinalis MF

Store below 25°C.
Keep the medicine in a place inaccessible and out of sight of children.
Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the packaging following EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of the stated month.

6. Contents of the package and other information

What Carbo Medicinalis MF contains

• The active substance is activated charcoal in an amount of 250 mg.
• Other components of the medicine are: sucrose, lactose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and magnesium stearate.
