1. What Ursitan is and what it is used for

Ursitan is an eye drop that contains an antibiotic (tobramycin) which acts against microorganisms causing bacterial infections of the eye surface.

Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and are not effective against viral infections.

It is important that you follow the instructions regarding dosage, dosing interval, and duration of treatment as indicated by your doctor.

Do not store or reuse this medicine. If you have any antibiotic left after completing the treatment, return it to the pharmacy for proper disposal. Medicines must not be disposed of down the drain or in household waste.

This medicine is used to treat bacterial infections on the surface of the eye and other parts of the eye, such as conjunctivitis, in adults, adolescents, and children 1 year of age and older. Eye infections can cause irritation symptoms such as redness and discharge.

2. What you need to know before using Ursitan

Do not use Ursitan:

If you are allergic to tobramycin or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting to use Ursitan.

  • Use this medicine only in your eye(s).

  • If you develop symptoms of an allergic reaction while using this medicine, stop treatment and consult your doctor. Allergic reactions may range from localized itching or skin redness to severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic reaction) or serious skin reactions. These allergic reactions may occur with other topical or systemic antibiotics of the same family (aminoglycosides).

  • If you are using another antibiotic treatment together with this medicine, consult your doctor.

  • If you have or have had conditions such as myasthenia gravis (a neuromuscular disorder causing weakness in skeletal muscles) or Parkinson's disease (a progressive nervous system disorder affecting movement), consult your doctor. This type of antibiotic may worsen muscle weakness.

  • If your symptoms worsen or suddenly return, contact your doctor. If you use this medicine for a long time, you may become more susceptible to eye infections.

  • If you wear contact lenses

    • Wearing contact lenses is not recommended during treatment of an eye infection.
  • If you or members of your maternal family have a disease caused by a mitochondrial mutation (a genetic disorder) or hearing loss due to antibiotics, you are advised to inform your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. Certain mitochondrial mutations may increase your risk of hearing loss with this product. Your doctor may recommend genetic testing before administering tobramycin.

Three sequential drawings show hands opening a bottle, twisting the cap, and applying a drop of medication directly into the eye

  1. Wash your hands before starting.
  2. Use a tissue to thoroughly dry your eye.
  3. Separate one unit-dose container from the strip of containers inside the pouch (image 1).
  4. Twist the tab at the end of the container one full turn (image 2).
  5. Hold the container upside down between your thumb and the other fingers.
  6. Tilt your head backward.
  7. Gently pull down the lower eyelid with one finger to create a small pocket between your eyelid and eye, into which the drop should fall (image 3).
  8. Bring the tip of the container close to your eye. A mirror may be helpful.
  9. Do not touch the eye, eyelid, nearby areas, or any other surface with the container, as the drops could become contaminated.
  10. Gently squeeze the base of the container to release the drop.
  11. Squeeze gently; there is no need to apply force.
  12. Once the drop is in your eye, close your eyes, keep them closed, and gently press with the tip of your finger on the inner corner of the eye near the nose for at least 1 minute after administration to prevent the medication from draining into the rest of the body.
  13. The contents of the single-dose container must be used immediately after opening, and any unused portion must be discarded.

If drops are being applied to both eyes, repeat all the previous steps for the other eye.

If the drop does not fall into the eye, try again.

If you are using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between administering this medicine and any other eye medications. Ophthalmic ointments should be administered last.

If you use more Ursitan than you should, you can remove it by rinsing the eyes with lukewarm water. Although adverse effects are not expected, do not apply further drops until it is time for your next scheduled dose.

In case of overdose or accidental ingestion, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately or call the Toxicology Information Service at 91 562 04 20, indicating the medicine and the amount ingested.

If you forget to use Ursitan, apply a single dose as soon as you remember, then continue with your next scheduled dose. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, do not apply the missed dose and continue with your next dose according to your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for missed doses.

If you have any further questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
